Gifts for runners and walkers

Ultra-light merino running socks with Darn Tough's lifetime guarantee, so when they finally wear through, they get replaced. There's a women's version too.

A stretchy pouch that rides at the waist and holds a phone and keys. It beats running for 45 minutes with a phone clenched in one hand.

Sunglasses made for running, in a pile of loud colors. At $30 a pair, losing one on a trail isn't a tragedy.

For sore calves after a long one. The textured surface digs in better than a smooth roller, and it's small enough to live next to the couch.

A light-up vest that glows in bright colors and recharges over USB. For anyone out before sunrise, it's the difference between being seen and being a gray shape on a dark road.

Open-ear headphones that sit outside the ear, so they hear the music and the car coming up behind them. Water-resistant, and good for up to 10 hours.

A GPS running watch with a bright screen that tracks pace, distance and heart rate. Good for the walker who just started counting miles and the runner training for a first race.

Sign them up for a turkey trot or a spring 5K, and sign yourself up too. A date on the calendar is what keeps people going out the door all winter.
